Taking the leap from using art as a therapeutic outlet at home to opening the doors of Miss-Vee Art Studio at La Place Carenage wasn’t just a career shift, it was a leap of faith.
When some parents first walk into the studio, I often see a familiar look in their eyes. It’s that quiet mixture of exhaustion and fierce love that I know all too well. They share stories of parent-teacher conferences where terms like "falling behind" or "disruptive" were tossed around, leaving their child feeling small and misunderstood. I always tell them the same thing: Take a deep breath. In this space, we don't measure potential by standard grade levels.
I remember one young boy who came to a workshop a few months ago. In a traditional classroom, multi-step instructions and dense worksheets triggered instant anxiety for him. For the first ten minutes in the studio, he sat with his arms crossed, guarding himself against what he assumed would be another situation where he might "fail."
Instead of giving him rules, I handed him a paint brush and sponges, a palette of paint, and told him to simply make noise on the canvas using color instead of voice.
By the end of the hour, he hadn't just painted; he had unburdened himself. The tension left his shoulders, replaced by pride as he looked at a vibrant splash of color he created entirely on his own terms. That is the magic of creative expression. When you remove the demand for verbal or mathematical precision, a child’s true inner brilliance finally gets room to breathe.
My hope for Miss-Vee Art Studio has always been bigger than just teaching technique. I want to build a community that sees and celebrates neurodiversity. Every mural we paint and every community workshop we host carries that message: invisible disabilities do not mean invisible potential.
Whether you are a parent navigating a learning disability diagnosis, an educator looking for new ways to reach struggling students, or simply someone who believes in the power of inclusive art, you are part of this mission. Together, we can rewrite the narrative for these amazing kids, one brushstroke at a time.
